Three individuals have been sentenced to 12 years in prison by a Belgian court for their involvement in a violent crypto-related abduction targeting the wife of Stéphane Winkel, a prominent figure in the country’s cryptocurrency scene.
The December 2024 incident saw the victim forcibly taken outside her home and held for ransom in cryptocurrency. Law enforcement, alerted swiftly by Winkel, intercepted the van transporting the victim and apprehended the kidnappers in a dramatic roadside operation. The woman was safely rescued.
Despite the convictions, the court confirmed that those who orchestrated the plot remain unidentified. The defendants, who also face over €1 million in damages, had claimed they were coerced under threat of death — a defense the court dismissed. A minor tied to the case is being dealt with separately.
Winkel, known for his platforms Crypto Académie and Crypto Sun, has scaled back public activity since the attack. In a statement, he emphasized a shift toward greater personal security and pledged to continue educating others while avoiding giveaways and live wallet demonstrations.
The incident adds to a worrying global pattern. In recent months, crypto-linked abductions have surfaced in France and elsewhere, raising questions about the safety of public-facing crypto figures. As digital assets grow in value and visibility, so too do the risks for those in the spotlight.
